Have you ever wondered if God really speaks to people today? Maybe you’ve longed to hear His voice when making a big decision, facing a challenge, or searching for peace. Wouldn’t it be amazing if, in the middle of confusion, you could hear God say, “This is the way, walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21)?
The truth is—God does speak. In fact, He speaks more often than we realize. The challenge is not whether God speaks, but whether we recognize His voice.
Let’s explore how God has spoken in the past and how He still speaks today.
How God Spoke in the Bible
Throughout Scripture, God revealed Himself in many ways:
Through Divine Revelation
God unveiled hidden truths to those in close relationship with Him. John received the Book of Revelation this way while in the Spirit.
Through an Audible Voice
Abraham heard God’s voice telling him to leave his homeland (Genesis 12:1–4). While audible voices are rare today, God still has the power to speak this way.
Through Dreams and Visions
Joseph and Daniel received life-changing direction through dreams. Dreams often carry warnings, guidance, or encouragement. If you don’t remember your dreams, ask God to help you pay attention—He may be speaking while you sleep.
Through the Prophets
In the Old Testament, God used prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah. Today, however, Hebrews 1:1 reminds us that God speaks through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Through Circumstances
Job, Gideon, and Jacob all experienced God’s voice in the middle of trials. Sometimes our hardships are the very place God uses to draw us closer to Him.
Through Angels
Angels announced the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. Scripture reminds us to be mindful—some strangers may be “angels unaware” (Hebrews 13:2).
Through the Holy Spirit
In the Old Testament, the Spirit came and went. But since Pentecost (Acts 2), the Holy Spirit lives within every believer, guiding, comforting, and teaching us.
How God Speaks Today
God hasn’t stopped speaking. He still uses many of the same methods we see in the Bible, but four stand out most clearly for believers today:
Through the Word of God
The Bible is God’s primary voice to us. Every answer we need is written there. Scripture guides, teaches, warns, comforts, and assures us. If you want to hear God, open your Bible daily.
Through the Holy Spirit
The Spirit nudges our hearts, impresses God’s will on our minds, and gives us peace or warning when making decisions. The closer we walk with God, the more clearly we’ll recognize His Spirit’s voice.
Through Other People
Sometimes God speaks through the words of a friend, a sermon, or even a stranger. Pay attention—you might find God’s wisdom in an unexpected conversation.
Through Circumstances
Both successes and failures, joys and disappointments can carry God’s voice. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us there’s a purpose for every season. If we look closely, we’ll find God teaching us through every situation.

Final Encouragement
God is not silent. He longs for His children to know His voice and walk in His will. The more we read His Word, listen to His Spirit, and stay alert to His hand in our lives, the easier it becomes to recognize when He’s speaking.
Remember: Hearing God isn’t just for a chosen few. It’s for you.
So the next time you find yourself asking, “Lord, which way should I go?”—pause, listen, and trust that God still whispers, “This is the way, walk in it.”
